For a while before xmas 2007 after the VON Conference and Podcamp Boston i was all revved up with social media, twitter networking, seesmicing, blogtv-ing, and blog reading, but not working at a paying job. Those are the downfalls of being a freelancer. And at some point right around those stressful xmas days when i realized that i wouldn't be able to afford the xmas getaway vaction i planned, and with no work on the horizon, you could say that i was feeling less than 100% happy.
So with my tail tucked between my legs i started doing construction work with my brother in the bitter cold weather, framing, and renovating a century home in my old home town, across from my old high school, and near my parents house, just enough emotional buttons and childhood memories and thoughts of coming full circle with my career... ending back at high school doing construction work again, just like i was 16. That was not a great feeling for a while, until i discoverd how cute my brothers kids were to be around during lunch break and after work.
And then shortly the phone began to ring, and i found myself freelancing for the highest profile daily show in Canada. Another ring i found myself working back with my #1 corporate client during the day, and another ring came a big budget freelance job producing, shooting and editing.
Followed by Podcamp Toronto, DemoCamp Toronto, and the Coaching course i am taking with Jason Van Orden it seems like i am slowly getting back on track again.
Maybe this second time around i will sit back a bit more and be more observant and less participatory as i try to figure out where i want to be in the social media mix.
I certainly have lots of opinons, ideas, and energy for how others can promote themselves and their products but as of yet, i am unsure of myself and what i can offer, how i can generate a living from social media consulting, businesss consulting, or products and services i can sell outside of brodcast and corporate video editing.
One day at a time for now, maybe a ski vacation or two, hopefully with time i will figure out a few paths to "fail forward" with.
Thanks for reading!

It was great meeting you at PCT. It definitely looks like social media consulting is in-line with things like SEO. Its easy to do because its suppose to be. Find the right books or articles online and you are done. At the same time people with skills like yourself can push things in new directions, because there are still big holes in the social media pie. I think your right in terms of backing away from the commentary, anyone can have an opinion. What's cooler and a lot harder is getting something done. I'm have a development background so I have decided to get in the game and build something bigger and better than the competition. If social news is to imitate offline life there will be enough oxygen in the room for my property.
If I was a video whiz like yourself I would start a video ad production company. If video is the big thing that's coming people need to get their videos made. You could be a big player. Just an idea, either way you have to take advantage of your strengths.
Congrats on the new gigs.
Never give up... Sounds like you've got the work. Now build out your plan for where you want to take it.
Over the past couple of years the social media scene has been sometimes distressing since it was WAY ahead of the general public. Those times are changing...
I've been more of the attitude to "keep doing what I do", and find ways to incorporate new thought into it.
Good point Travell, getting something done is easy for the big established bloggers and videobloggers, doing something that is me doesn't have to compete or be as public as the most prominent figureheads.
Vergel, yes i see it now, the social media is way ahead of everyone else, a parachute back to reality is what i needed and is what happened by doing that manual labour job... theres a whole world still just commuting and listening to the radio and working simple jobs.
Make no mistake the TV industry is chaning very fast and slimming down like a hollywood actress ASAP.
Feeling out a few options and trying to enjoy my life as it unfolds instead of letting it unfold me is the challenge!
great stuff.
enjoy your posts.
I was wondering where you disappeared to. :) Glad you're back!
What happened to your rant on 40+ women. It was great! Would love to share it with my buddies.
